The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) provides guidance and information about a variety of topics related to a person's health. Prevention is emphasized.
In November 1985 NHLBI launched the National Cholesterol Education Program to raise awareness and understanding about high blood cholesterol as a risk factor for coronary heart disease through various educational efforts.

The facts in this booklet should be of every woman's concern: One in ten American women 45 to 64 years of age has some form of heart disease, which increases to one in four women age 65 and over. Both heart disease and stroke are known as cardiovascular diseases, which are serious disorders of the heart and blood vessel system.
