Is colorectal cancer preventable?

Yes - if polyps are detected early enough. 95% of colorectal cancers develop in the inner lining of the colon and rectum. They then spread through some or all of the other layers in the walls of the colon and the rectum. This process occurs over several years and, before cancerous cells develop, polyps can usually be detected. As polyps regularly release small amounts of blood, the simplest testing method is using a fecal occult blood test.

ColonCARE is an immunological fecal occult blood test which does not require observance of any dietary restrictions, only one stool sample and delivers results in just 5 minutes. The test is inexpensive and available over the counter in pharmacies, supermarkets and health food stores.

If the ColonCARE test is positive, there is blood present in the stool. A physician must then determine the exact source of the bleeding. For example, should polyps be found, early removal is critical to prevent them from developing into cancer.
